We welcome details of any new UK studios, either planned or recently opened, to share with users of The Studio Map
It has been widely reported in Birmingham and the West Midlands that Create Central will build a studio complex in Digbeth near to Birmingham city centre.
Thank you, David, for the heads-up. I imagine these might be the much-rumoured ‘Mercian Studios’, see above. Here’s a more recent news reference & link: “Peaky Blinders founder Steven Knight thinks Hollywood producers will be banging on the door of Birmingham when his new movie studio opens”.
Thanks, Tony,
Steven Knight’s Mercian Studios are a different project to the Create Central studios I mentioned.
Mercian Studios were originally planned to be built on the outskirts of the city near Birmingham Airport. That plan still remains, hopefully at some point In the future. Steven Knight has since announced that the first phase of Mercian Studios is now planned to be built in Digbeth which is near to the city centre.
Create Central are a group of broadcasting professionals based in and around Birmingham with some support from the West Midlands Combined Authority, although they are an independent organisation. They announced two or three months ago that they will be renovating a number of old industrial buildings, also in Digbeth, to provide state of the art studios very much within the centre of Birmingham.
Both of these projects are entirely separate from each other.
Apparently the BBC, amongst others, are interested in using Create Central’s facilities. Steven Knight might be justifiably optimistic about getting Hollywood interested in his studios as he is reported to be in negotiations with backers from the US. An announcement is expected soon.

Hi David – Just to clarity – Create Central is not building a studio in Digbeth. We are working with Steven Knight on his Digbeth Loc studios and are the industry partner for the new Creative Content Hub at The Bond in Digbeth (listed here).
Hi Tony,
Where are we going to get the technical expertise from.
There’s a shortage of staff for all departments and grades on the current level of film Production now.
It’s a real problem, Dave. “Projections for the next five years tell us we’re going to need a minimum of 30,000 people coming into the workforce…” – a recent quote from Adrian Wootton, Film London. There is an industry-wide scramble to train and re-train to address this shortage. And it’s not just a UK problem.

Hi James, Many thanks for bringing Studio Ulster to the attention of The Studio Map. What’s the timeline for the full opening of the studio? Tony
Hi James, Our users would love to know the timeline for the full opening of the studio. Do you know the schedule? Tony, Publisher, Pocket Films
… Readers will also find it useful to google around “new film studios in the UK” as the scale of development is quite eye-opening (this post is a good round at the time of writing)
